Off the top of my head: Intel Management Engine is a proprietary, Minix-based subsystem present on all i core series Intel motherboards.
It's basically spyware; always running, capable of networking, able to read from RAM, etc.; and can be removed from some older Thinkpads (like the X230) using resources like ME Cleaner.
All that said, it'll definitely be installed on your system, and if present is worth updating for security fixes (laughable as that is, seen as nobody can audit the code except Intel).

"Intel Management Engine Components" is the user-visible software component of the Intel Management Engine. It appears under this name in Programs and Features. It is the software package that causes the "Intel Management & Security Status" icon to appear in the system tray.
