Just got my home theater hooked up with Ambilight
By - ANewTomorrowSoon
I'm new to Reddit so I was of the assumption that posts get approved by mods first. Anyways, my avr is right there in the front for anyone to validate that it's a home theater :-D
Hue is great but it's just so expensive where I'm from and I wasn't sure if I'll be into this. Luckily, this just costs $35. And yes! I've always used normal led strips before for exactly the same reasons you mentioned. It really does help the eyes.
Can you link the hardware you're using? I see lots of options on Amazon but none that look like they do what this does for $35
Here you go -
1,900 gibberish dollars?!
Ah, it only works for PC. Can't work for TV's. I was about to be super excited.
I was close to posting about my new setup that is novice level but brings me a great deal of joy. After seeing these turds rain on your parade I’ll keep my joy to myself. Geez..
Yeah, I wasn't expecting these kinda reactions to be honest :-D But everyone has a right to voice their opinions and I appreciate that. I'm a novice as well and I am a bit taken aback with some of the comments but there are some really nice ones as well. I'll be waiting to see what your setup looks like :-)
Dont let these people get you frustrated. Keep learning and find out what you like. There is some pretty good info on youtube from ps audio that helped explain some things for me.
Thank YOU! I'll be sure to check out ps audio.
After working in the studio for awhile I always appreciated constructive criticism. I think my shell may be a little thicker. I was going to comment on the wiring lol then I realized my standards are different because of the work I did and to keep my mouth shut. The wiring hanging out the bottom would drive me batsh crazy watching a movie lol.. But it may not bother you.
I would have then followed up with looks great and good job. I wish I had the setup. Honestly I'm so behind on what's available these days. That's why I joined the sub.
I think most people are just trying to help. Some of us maybe snobs and some of us are just use to having things are certain way for whatever reason. Then there are some that are just jelly. So the true axxhls are very small percentage.
There are limits, i hate safe spaces... you never learn anything in those environments. Constructive criticism is important
I think these people are just trying to help you man it’s not all venom spitting
If that is your center channel on top of your avr you're going to want to move it. Your avr cools passively out of the top vent and you're suffocating it by having the center on top.
I agree! I'm waiting for some hardware to arrive so that I can wall mount it. Also, it's a basic Yamaha and it runs cool. Over 50% of the vents on top are still exposed and I've monitored temps. But yes, I'll be moving it nevertheless especially for acoustic reasons.
Pretty cool looking, but I'd never want something like this as part of my HT setup.
Yeah, I don't plan to use it with live action movies because I wasn't too impressed with how this looked. It'll just be for music, gaming and probably anime.
Yeah it's more to show off, it'll throw your perception of contrast off.
I think it would be great for sports, music, gaming, and nature documentaries. Don't get all the hate. Gonna get the Govee light bars myself
I have an old DreamScreen (R.I.P.) and I like it for everything but watching the news.
I like how there are so many home theater professionals are in here like “hey you need to move your stuff” and I’m always thinking like “bitch I like my stuff where it’s at you move your face!”
Lol! That was funny :-D
But the guy who asked me to move my center speaker said it with good intentions though so I won't blame them :-)
Looks good OP, I have a similar setup using the govee immersion kit 👌
Ah, I've heard good things about Govee. Unfortunately, can't get them where I'm from.
Can you link the one your talking about... I want to do something like this but I don’t want to sacrifice picture quality or hdr or anything like that
Would be cool if you were listening to music to have as a background. Agreed with not using for movies or TV, way too distracting.
Yeah, that's the plan. It doesn't look good with movies etc. Would probably work for gaming too.
Yea, I’d definitely give gaming a shot with it.
I think it looks cool and I can consider this in my TV room where I play Xbox. But in my home theater I try to get as little reflections as possible and only have the focus on the screen.
Still think it looks nice OP.
Yeah, I don't think I'm going to use this for movies. As others have rightly mentioned, it's quite distracting and I haven't calibrated it properly yet either.
I guess the good thing about using a camera based system is that it can bypass DRM content but I don't think I want a camera sticking out of my TV.
And, I can't wait to get some transducers in my seats as well :-D
Man this video is obviously a demo to highlight what the effect looks like, but I think it may work fine for movies. If you can turn the maximum intensity down a bit I think it may add some cool immersion to some things. And I don’t think the lag is all that bad either. Don’t let a bunch of butt hurt boners keep you from using it for movies as well.
Looks awesome and the most important thing is you like it. They elitist snobs in here need to stop shitting on everything they possibly can.
Yeah, it looks better in person. The colours look a bit washed out on video.
I’ve always found these cool but my wall/surrounding space is so cluttered and I’m so ADD that I’d get too distracted by everything. Dig the setup though!
Yeah, you really need a plain wall for this to work otherwise it'd piss me off as well :-D
Where can I pick these up?
Many "Home Theater people" (myself included) spend time and money and energy to PREVENT light from a display to color or illuminate the area around the display. Some (myself included) go so far as to paint the walls and ceiling black, install black carpet, or add velvet/fabric flocking around the screen. All in an effort to prevent this very effect from occurring.
So it seems strange in a home theater subreddit to see someone embrace and encourage (and artificially generate) a lighting effect that's usually considered undesirable and unwanted by many in the hobby.
Okay - having well synced light from the display expands the viewable area perception.
I have no idea who these people in the hobby are but I love mine, everyone who comes over thinks it’s badass.
Plus having some light behind screen helps with eye strain anyway
Well it aint your theater so you dont gotta look at it. And I’m sure Op would have no interest in inviting you or any of these other pretentious d-bags over to see it, so problem solved.
People like different things.
I agree. Could someone explained why this is a desirable effect?
It's just something that is aesthetically pleasing for a lot of people. I happen to agree that it's a bit more immersive when done perfectly.
It's not for everyone, especially the older generation of "philes" that don't consider that anything new or different could possibly be better or more pleasing to anyone else. To each their own.
It's not desirable one bit. That's just it. It's all a gimmick, people think it's "cool" but it's just dumb as hell is all it is.
LOL same here, I want my TV floating in front of a black background, though these do look dope for a party.
I'm with /u/GbMaxSE on this one here. Such a gimmick and looks like trash.
The start of the demo looked OK. You can see what they're going for, an artificial embiggening of the screen. Kind of like those vertical videos, where they stick a blurry version down the sides to fill your screen.
Anything more complex and it has no idea what to do with it. The illusion completely falls apart.
From the little knowledge that I have about this, it's only supposed to capture the colours that are on the edges of the screen. Also, I haven't calibrated this thing fully yet. It's just Day 1 of me having it.
I mean, it’s a neat idea and looks cool, I bet my 4 and 6 year old would love it, but it would drive me nuts actually watching something with it on.
> but it would drive me nuts actually watching something with it on.
Uh- yeah- maybe try one first?
Why? don’t like it
Well if you haven’t used it in person than you may underestimate it’s usefulness. That is all
I’ve had one for a while and use it both on my ultra wide gaming PC and home theater. I think it is very badass (assuming synch works).
In fact everyone I’ve had over has agreed it’s cool.
So disagree on trash, disagree on gimmick
> (assuming synch works).
Which it doesn't and never will. It's slow, laggy and again looks like trash.
Oh look UMDIVX has an opinion.
Dude - post a picture of your setup so i can call it trash and say your clueless. I mean why not?
Your opinion is irrelevant - i certainly don’t care. Other than I think you are bit of a jerk about it
Yes I have an opinion, that's the great thing about this world, is we can all have our opinions. I didn't call his setup trash, I said it was stupid with the gimmicky lights. Big difference.
I just hate the sack riding people give when people post up this bullshit. "oh look I have stupid lights come love me" GTFOH with that shit.
No one cares about what you hate. OP didn’t say “feedback on setup”
Not sure why you feel the need to go post on how much you hate shit that other people setup.
I have no idea what the fuck sack riding is- but this lighting is cool and I’m confident it will get better.
I also walked away if the finding that “you like peeing in other Cheerios. “ Good luck with that.
Now go back to your moms basement please the adults are talking
> No one cares about what you hate. OP didn’t say “feedback on setup”
and I don't care that no one cares.
> Not sure why you feel the need to go post on how much you hate shit that other people setup.
Because then I don't have to see the stupid gimmick bullshit posts any more. Ambilight is NOT Home Theater.
> I have no idea what the fuck sack riding is- but this lighting is cool and I’m confident it will get better.
You're doing it now.
What system are you using? I use Phillips myself
This one's called Ambilight and it only costs $35
I too like to watch my tv while standing up
Recorded the video from the ground. The TV isn't placed that high up :-D
Why do people put such crappy lighting around their nice TVs? I thought that fad was just for cars and motorcycles.
I don't know but I like it! Used to have lights under my motorcycle as well. Probably a defect I was born with :-D
But seriously read about how ambient lighting reduces eye strain in a dark room. That's why a lot of people do it.
Are you under the delusion that anything about this looks good, or is impressive?
There's very obvious lag and color matching issues and this content should be a soft ball for the system.
Not for me but if you love it, more power to you. I don't think this even fits under the home theater moniker either but I don't make those decisions.
Edited for misuse of disillusion.
He likes it and thinks it's neat. If you don't like you don't have to buy one.
Appreciate it :)
Just noticed your other points - Yes, there is a lag and there are colour issues as well. I'm yet to calibrate it properly.
And as for loving it, I just like trying out new things. I'm definitely not going to use them while watching movies because it's not that great. As to whether this fits in this sub-reddit, these things are gaining quite a bit of popularity in home-based systems hence the post.
No, I actually think it looks good and is quite impressive. Doesn't really work for movies though. There's a reason why the Philips Hue stuff sells. If you don't like it, that's fair too.
Dont listen to that guy. I think it looks awesome!
Im glad you liked it :-)
Because you have horrible taste?
Stuff em. I think it looks cool. What did you use to do that
For the record nothing in that link says it's ambilight, this is an ambilight clone. When buying this you are NOT getting an actual ambilight product.
You're right! Ambilight is just the keyword for these clone products.
Hey, plenty of people put neon lights under their Civics in the 90s too, there's no accounting for taste.
Personally I think it looks tacky, super distracting, and makes the wires hanging down under your TV more obvious, but what do I know?
Lol! I hear you :-D
I just wanted to try this out. I'm definitely not going to use them while I watch movies because I didn't like it and it is distracting as you mentioned. The video was taken with my tripod on the floor which is why the other wires are visible otherwise I can only see one (trying to fix it) from my seating position.
>There's a reason why the Philips Hue stuff sells
Because people are dumb?
Maybe. But a lot of those people do like lights like me :-D
I'd drop uncomfortable amounts of money on mood lighting, or cool visualizer light effects. This is cool, even if not the style I'd like.
To each is their own, but not going to get any love/admiration from the likes of me. It's dumb as hell.
Man why comment with your negativity? Who doesn’t like tv light where you from 1956???
Don't feed the umdivx - its a battle that will never end ;)
Because I won't feed into this ambilight bullshit, it's a fucking stupid ass gimmick that takes away from the PQ
Hmm. Fair. Though I think disillusion works.
Nah. You're trying to disillusion him, by referring to his love of this as delusion.
I really like my setup (Phillips Hue) but agree I’d like to see lag reduced.
Yet even with that - i love it! Both games and movies
How is it with actual content, movies, tv etc? I’ve been tempted with this for ages but never really see any practical demos.
I did it as a DIY project with an arduino and Hyperion. I love it as long as the scenes aren't rapidly changing. Always have it on for gaming. Setting it to a warmer color also makes for a fantastic night light. As you can see by the comments, its pretty polarizing. IMO it's worth it to have a good quality setup for color accuracy and responsiveness.
My initial impressions with movies weren't that great. It could be because I haven't calibrated this properly yet. But I do have a feeling that I'm only going to use this with music and gaming.
Polarizing is an understatement 😂
Yeah I can totally see it adding to games, something like no mans sky would really be something with this set up. Cheers for the info
It's this kit called Ambilight. Got it from Banggood for $35. It's there on Aliexpress as well. I'm guessing that's what you meant to ask?
Oh sick, thank you. I didn't even know ambilight was a thing and I'm wondering how it works but I'll youtube it
A YouTube video will explain better than I can but in short, the kit has led strips, a picture grabbing box and a power adapter. You hook them all up and it captures the colours on your display and the led lights light up accordingly. You can't really use it with DRM content because it won't be able to grab data from Netflix etc but I've heard there are workarounds for that.
It should be known that it's an ambilight clone, and not actually ambilight branded.
Ah yes! It's not the Philips Ambilight
Does that video come with Ambilight to showcase the effect or is it something you found online?
